You are invited to the Fundraiser for Symposium 2007: "Roots
of Spirituality" a Brunch with the sounds of gospel.
This year we will be graced by an international cast of
multitalented musicians who will entertain us with songs and
music that reflect the spiritual roots of our community.
We will be thrilled during our traditional brunch of
Guyanese favorite dishes by the gospel renditions of Danny
Coakley, the classical compositions of Beth Anderson ,the
uplifting voice of Janelle Brathwaite, the resonance of song of
Trenton Mack.

THE FIFTH ANNUAL
GUYANA FOLK FESTIVAL SYMPOSIUM 2007:
Theme: "Oii" (Origins, Identity, and Influence)
The Fifth
Annual Symposium of the Guyana Folk Festival, an event produced
and sponsored by Guyana Cultural Association, announces its
theme for 2007.
Drawing on the bicentennial of the abolition of the trade in
African captives (the Atlantic Slave Trade) and the later
political independence from Britain in 1966, the theme is "Oii"
(Origins, Identity, and Influence)
In 2006, Ron Lammy's symposium paper introduced the concept
of "Oii" and established the focus for this year's Symposium.
In the spirit of our Guyanese collectivity and memory we
continue this examination of our place in our extended, and
indeed global, community.
And so Oii, how you doing? Oii, you coming to the symposium?

JANELLE BRATHWAITE
Janelle
Brathwaite is a native of Barbados. She loves to perform and
recently graduated from Borough of Manhattan Community College
with an associate degree in Theater. Janelle hopes to be a great
opera singer one day, after completing her music degree at
Hunter College/CUNY. A mezzo-soprano, she started singing at the
age of three, in Church, and has sung in concerts throughout
Barbados.
BETH
ANDERSON
At the start
of the twenty-first century, composer Beth Anderson is one of
the most exciting personalities on the American classical music
scene, bucking trends of formalism and attempting to make touch
with her inner self, tastes and identity in her music.
Beth Anderson is a composer of new romantic music, and music
theater events.
TRENTON
MACK
Trenton Mack:
Acknowledged in the Guyanese Diaspora and a member of several
Guyanese based choirs, the highly respected Trenton Mack, whose
powerful voice is legendary, started his singing career in his
hometown, in Essequibo, Guyana and was recognized at the British
Music Festival with honors.< br>
In the United States, Trenton Mack was honored by the Guyana
Cultural Association for his outstanding contribution to music
in Guyana, and has performed and toured with the United Nations
Choir to Germany, Japan and throughout the United States.
DANIEL COAKLEY
Danny Coakley, a
native New Yorker started singing at an early age. He studied
music at the New York school of music and is an outstanding
soloist performing at Churches and Concert Halls in the New York
area.
In 2001 Danny produced his first CD entitled "A Dream
Fulfilled" and has performed at the Aaron Davis Hall, for the
Wendell P. Whalum recital and opened for world renowned Yolanda
Adams at the world famous Apollo Theater. He also opened for
Jazz Saxophonist Kirk Whalum at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center
in New York.
